ESPN has completed a ranking of 122 popular sports teams based on the overall strength of their analytics staff and dependency on performance data in order to make intelligent predictions for the good of their players and team. The MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL were all dipped into for this research objective.
The Top 10 “All-In” sports teams who rely on data the most include in order of top ranking: The Philadelphia 76ers, the Houston Astros, the Houston Rockets, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Mavericks, the Oakland Athletics, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Bottom 10 sports teams titled the “Nonbelievers” in analytics include: The Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Jets, the Miami Marlins, the Tennessee Titans, the Colorado Avalanche, the Brooklyn Nets, the San Diego Chargers, the Washington Redskins, the New York Knicks, and the Philadelphia Phillies.
With these findings, it is clear that there’s a wide spectrum of teams that simply ignore analytical data come decision time, as well as pay it some amount of attention. Every sports team is run differently based on their specific coaching and management staff, thus producing a large degree of difference in the way that data is utilized or ignored on and off the playing field.
